Title
Open Work Environment - Enterprise Linux Desktop as internal Open Source project
Description
Usually desktop environments in any enterprise organization are a closely guarded domain of some central IT department. While this might still work in the case of Windows desktops and non-technical users, this approach is totally incompatible with tech savvy users or IT professionals.
At ImmobilienScout24 we had the same situation with the desktops of our IT staff, some 170 developers, QA engineers, admins and other IT professionals. The corporate IT department offered a centrally managed, stable (e.g. Enterprise Linux based) and locked down Linux desktop, the develops wanted a recent desktop with a maximum of freedom on their own desktop.
This workshop is about how we managed to resolve this conflict of interest to everybody's satisfaction:
- Assign the responsibility for the IT desktop to the IT people
- Convince IT management to support an open work environment which encourages innovation through freedom and deals with transgression on an organizational level
- Create a new network to partition security risks
- Define requirements that the organization demands from any desktop environment
- Create an internal Open Source project to build and maintain the automation for the Linux desktop
After attending this workshop participants will have
- Some insights into the work environment at ImmobilienScout24
- Practical advice how to get a Linux Desktop in a Windows-centric enterprise organization
- A template for a management decision in favor of self-serviced Linux desktops for IT professionals
