Title

K16++: A vision for the next 10 years of UX

Description

KDE has just released its 7th release of their workspace and applications, and Gnome presented their new concept Gnome Shell. But what is the natural next step for the free desktops? Discussions with library and application developers, artists and usability experts from various teams in the KDE community showed that there actually are many ideas for this already.

Based on this we will present a vision of a seamless environment that moves away from applications and instead emphasizes tasks. You can call this task-based computing with a user centered term or component-based computing if you want to focus on the technology. We will present this new paradigm using many examples from the Calligra suite and Kontact communication platform. We will show how task-based computing will help the user perform whatever task is at hand in whatever context she is in at the moment.

We will also present how the current applications can be transformed into a set of services that can be used by any application to let the user perform the task in question. We will show existing technologies in KDE that can help in making this vision a reality and improve the power of the computer to help the user. We will also show how to transform the architecture of existing applications to help with integration with other applications as well as external services like web services.
