Title

Community Development: A discussion of contributor vs. community needs and values

Description

Intro: An individual, group, community and ecosystem all have their own needs and values. These needs and values are embedded in the decisions we make, both together and individually, and is based on the input from the environments that surround us. The needs and values shape our emotions, the relationships we make, the way we work, and the results of these elements in our lives.

Approach: Community Development at the macro-level incorporates both the structural elements and process elements which coincide within a community. At the micro-level, we have the individual who is the foundation on which the community is built. Both the community and individual have a set of needs and values which help shape the community culture and in turn, the development of the community. The individual's needs and value system may differ from that of the community's, so it is important for us to recognize that there is an equal demand for recognizing and understanding both.

Topics: Value Systems,Community Values,Contributor Values,Community Needs,Contributor Needs,Needs/Value Alignment, Tacit vs Explicit Knowledge Sharing,Organizational/Community Learning and Development

Goal: The goals of this BoF are to identify the the needs and values and to discuss how we can better align the needs and values of our contributors to match the needs and values of the community.

Discussion: This discussion will be aimed at all individuals and groups which would like to discuss how communities can better satisfy the needs and values of their contributors, as well as, how contributors can better satisfy the needs and values of their communities. Furthermore, this BoF is aimed at providing an appropriate low-key environment where these topics can be discussed in an open collaborative fashion. It is also geared towards providing a positive learning experience and understanding of the needs and values of different persons, groups and communities within the Free and Open Source Ecosystem.

The discussion will be more fruitful if we have a mix of members from different communities, SWG's, CWG's, Community Managers, Foundation Managers/Leads, Marketing Leads, Release Managers, developers, system admins, etc. The more variation we have, the more we will recognize the differences and similarities in our approaches and thus the more we will learn about how to better understand each other ;-) Cross-community and Cross-group discussions are encouraged.
